About the Designer:
George Mulhauser (1916–2002) was a pioneering industrial designer known for his innovative use of molded plywood in mid-century modern furniture. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, Mulhauser worked with influential design firms before joining Plycraft in 1953. As the company’s chief designer, he created some of his most iconic pieces, including the Mr. Chair and Mrs. Chair. These designs combined sculptural elegance with ergonomic comfort, helping to popularize the use of curved plywood in furniture.

Mulhauser’s work was widely recognized for its originality and craftsmanship, earning him a place in major exhibitions such as the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. His influence extended beyond Plycraft, with later contributions to Herman Miller and Steuben Glass. In addition to his design work, he shaped future generations of creatives through his teaching roles at the University of Bridgeport and the Pratt Institute.
