About the maker:
Breuners Home Furnishings was a historic American furniture chain founded in 1856 in Sacramento, California, by German immigrant John Breuner during the Gold Rush. It operated for 148 years with large storefronts across California and Nevada before filing for bankruptcy and liquidating its physical stores in 2004.
Historic pieces by Breuners range from 19th-century hand-carved gold rush antiques to mid-century modern statement pieces. Because Breuners operated as both a custom manufacturer in its early days and a high-end retailer in its later years, the age and style of a piece greatly impact its design and historical value.
Gold Rush Cradles (1850s): The earliest Breuners pieces were not home furniture at all. John Breuner built wooden "gold cradles" used by prospectors to sift through dirt for gold. These are incredibly rare museum-level artifacts today.
Victorian Hand-Carved Furniture (Late 1800s): As Sacramento grew, Breuners became a premium cabinetmaker. Pieces from this era feature heavy, heirloom-quality solid woods like walnut. Collectors frequently look for intricately hand-carved dressers, desks, and dining set.
In the mid-to-late 20th century, Breuners functioned primarily as a high-end showroom retailer. They partnered with top-tier manufacturers like Kent Coffey, Thomasville, or Broyhill. These companies made premium mid-century dressers and dining sets, which Breuners stamped with their own store label.
